Rash. Close-up of a 39 year old woman's wrist showing a rash at the site of a tattoo. Tattoos are designs made on the skin by introducing permanent dyes into the skin layers. Here, an allergy to a part of the process caused the rash, an area of raised and reddened skin. Tattooing safely requires sterile conditions, as there is a risk of transmitting hepatitis or AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) through the needles used. Rashes can be treated with soothing skin creams such as calamine lotion, or antihistamine drugs to reduce the inflammation and itching.
